FLEX. Logistics
We provide logistics services to online retailers in Europe: Amazon FBA prep, processing FBA removal orders, forwarding to Fulfillment Centers - both FBA and Vendor shipments.
For many international Amazon sellers, importing goods directly from manufacturing hubs in Asia or elsewhere via deep sea container is the most cost-effective way to stock inventory. However, a crucial question arises: can you ship this container directly to an Amazon fulfillment center? The answer is complex and depends entirely on the specific capabilities of the destination FC.
Â
Why Not All FCs Accept Containers
Direct container unloading is a specialised process that requires specific equipment and yard space.
- Equipment: FCs need yard jockey trucks to move containers and may require specialised equipment like clamp trucks if goods are not palletised.
- Yard Congestion: Live-unloading a container takes significant time and space, which can create bottlenecks in a busy fulfillment center yard.
- Customs and Drayage: The container must be fully customs-cleared before it can be accepted by Amazon. The journey from the port to the FC (drayage) also needs careful coordination.
Because of these complexities, only a select number of Amazon's European fulfillment centers are designated to handle deep sea import containers.
Â
Which FCs Are Likely to Accept Containers?
While Amazon's list of capable facilities can change, there are some general patterns:
- Major Logistics Hubs: Large, strategically important fulfillment centers are more likely to have the necessary infrastructure. Examples include DTM2 (Dortmund, Germany), WRO5 (Okmiany, Poland), and LIL1 (Lauwin-Planque, France).
- Proximity to Ports: While not a guarantee, facilities located within a reasonable distance of major container ports like Hamburg, Rotterdam, or Antwerp are often better equipped.
- Cross-Dock Centers (X-Docks): Some third-party operated cross-dock facilities, like XBH1 (Daventry, UK), are specifically designed to de-stuff containers and sort goods for onward distribution.
Â
Crucially, you must always verify this capability in the official Amazon specifications for the intended FC before shipping.
Â
The Standard Process: Using a 3PL Partner
For most sellers, the most reliable and efficient method is not to ship directly to Amazon. The standard industry practice involves a 3PL partner:
- Port to 3PL: Your container is transported from the port of arrival to your 3PL partner's warehouse.
- De-stuffing and Prep: The 3PL unloads (de-stuffs) the container, inspects the goods, and palletises them according to Amazon's strict FBA standards.
- Compliant FBA Delivery: The prepared, palletised goods are then shipped to one or more Amazon FCs on standard, compliant vehicles.

Conclusion
While direct container delivery to Amazon is possible at a few select locations, it carries significant risk. Using a 3PL partner to transload your shipment is the safer, more flexible, and universally accepted method.
