Clothes safety on imports from China

Clothing imported from China must meet the same safety standards as clothing manufactured in the European Union (EU). This includes compliance with relevant EU directives and regulations, such as the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) and the Textile Products Regulation (TPR).

Before importing clothing from China, it is important to ensure that the clothing complies with all relevant EU requirements, including:

1. Testing: The clothing must be tested by a recognized testing laboratory to ensure that it meets the relevant safety standards, such as flammability, color fastness, and pH levels.
2. Documentation: The manufacturer must provide a technical file that contains all relevant documentation, including test reports and a Declaration of Conformity.
3. Labeling: The clothing must be labeled with the fiber composition, care instructions, and any other relevant information such as the country of origin.

It is the responsibility of the importer to ensure that the clothing meets all EU requirements before importing it into the EU. If the clothing is found to be non-compliant, it can be subject to penalties, seizure, and even a ban from the EU market. In addition to the above, it is also important to be aware of other regulations such as the REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and restriction of Chemicals), which sets out requirements for the presence of hazardous substances in clothing and other products.
